Overview of project/role

This role is responsible for leading TfL’s engagement with organisations focusing on future urban mobility so TfL is better placed to work with market innovators to support the delivery of goals set out in the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.

The role is focused on ensuring that TfL adopts consistent best practice approaches to developing innovative and productive partnerships with market innovators including academics, start-ups, accelerators, transport operators, transport authorities, R&D institutions as well as not for profit bodies focusing on future emerging transport models to new innovative ideas that helps to run London’s transport system better.

The post-holder will run a series of ‘accelerator’ innovation challenges that will drive better outcomes for customers, TfL and the city. Bringing together other TfL teams including Procurement and Legal, this will include understanding the market, shaping propositions and proof of concepts, trialling with a view to scale new solutions.

Key Accountabilities
  • Responsible for running innovation challenges on specific themes from problem statement definition to potentially scaling
  • Identify, establish and maintain excellent strategic partnerships through a robust stakeholder management approach through stakeholder maps and account management processes which provide best value for TfL
  • Work closely with other members of TID to shape the right conversations with market innovators
  • Work with Commercial Procurement and Legal, to develop best practice market engagement from the different partnerships and provide the right Commercial ‘route to market’ for excellent ideas
  • Act as a ‘custodian’ of working with market innovators bringing together a wide range of TfL teams to shape ideas and propositions in the areas of future mobility

Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • Understanding the application of emerging technological trends in transport – Essential
  • Significant experience of assessing market trends, commercial information, technology developments and a wide range of strategic inputs considerations to define organisational vision and operations, particularly through partnership engagement – Essential
  • Significant experience of stakeholder management, dealing effectively with large, high profile public- and private-sector external organisations, and with complex internal relationships – Essential

  • Excellent understanding of commercial or business development, and partnership processes and techniques around developing innovative solutions – Essential
  • Excellent understanding of the different approaches to procurement and partnerships to access market innovation, particularly in the transport sector
  • In depth knowledge of economic, social, technological and environmental trends driving innovation and progress in the transport and mobility sectors particularly around emerging technology
  • Excellent understanding of start-ups, large technology players and other transport providers – Essential
  • Thorough knowledge of business case development and appraisal methods and techniques
  • Strong understanding of UK, European and International best-practice in transport policy and service provision
  • Thorough grounding in the operation of London’s transport organisations (TfL, GLA and boroughs)

  • Experience of running corporate innovation or accelerator programmes – Essential
  • Experience of working in future mobility and creating an eco-system of different partner types – Essential
  • Excellent commercial skills to help ensure successful outcomes at a senior level, including key decision-makers in highly political environments
  • Skills to be able to build strong collaborative working relationships with senior colleagues and external stakeholders – Essential
  • Ability to create a compelling case for innovation and change that provides value for TfL’s customers
  • A commercial outlook, identifying commercial and financial implications and wider organisational and industry approaches to develop robust plans
  • Willingness to explore options and act against the way things have traditionally been done – Essential
