The Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB) is seeking a highly motivated Biosafety and Health, Safety and Environment Officer. The two positions are available as separate or as a single position. We seek specialists managing the day-to-day aspects of biological safety and HSE for IOB’s intensively growing research community currently 70 members.

Your position

  • Establishing a biosafety and HSE concept for the new IOB site
  • Promoting the safe conduct of research and ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Performing risk assessments for proposed work
  • Ensuring that licenses are obtained from the proper authorities
  • Providing administrative controls, enforcement, and notification
  • Coordinating and inspecting BSL-1 and BSL-2 facilities
  • Providing advice to principal investigators and platform heads
  • Developing and conducting biosafety / HSE training and audits; maintaining associated databases
  • Serving as a resource during regulatory inspections
  • Advising and assisting in sending and receiving biological materials
  • Working closely with the Animal Welfare officer, Head of Animal facility and Head of Scientific Operations

Biosafety Officer

  • Evaluating and implementing programs to ensure safe and compliant activities in IOB laboratories including virus production and animal facility
  • Educating, advising and informing about biohazards including the handling of animal and human tissue samples
  • Performing risk assessment and developing of codes of practice
  • Communicating biosafety practices and procedures for control

Health, Safety and Environment Officer

  • Developing concepts to reduce accidents and exposure to harmful situations and substances
  • Training of personnel in accident prevention, safety awareness, accident response, emergency preparedness in collaboration with IFBR
  • Overseeing the use of protective clothing and equipment
  • Preparing contingency plans for action following accidents
  • Developing safe and environmentally friendly processes
  • Advising on waste disposal and disinfection policy
Your profile

  • Many years proven track record in the field of Biosafety and HSE, preferably in an academic environment
  • Interpreting and applying biosafety, HSE laws and regulations
  • Academic education or federal diploma of higher education in life sciences, including several years of laboratory experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, both in English and German
  • Experience in developing and delivering training.
  • Ability to stimulate changes in individual and institutional behaviors
  • Excellent management and problem-solving skills
  • Highly independent and organised
